Anime Songs That Can Get Me To Shed Tears

You can thank Winamp and it’s non-random random shuffling for this post.

I have a super condensed anime music playlist that I like to listen to; it’s only 230 songs long and there’s a handful of songs on this list that when I’m in the right mood will get me to shed a tear. Last night I wasn’t much in the mood but out-of-the-blue Winamp starts playing every sad song on the list in a row and even repeating some more than once so now I’m in that mood.

It’s probably not a good idea to marathon a Key series right now so instead I’ll write this post.

Oh, and there’s some spoilers so read at your own risk.

Natsukage – from AIR

Let’s start off with an obvious show that could generate a tear inducing song – AIR. This anime holds the personal record for the most tears shed while watching it (Clannad is a close second). See, I was a relatively new anime watcher at the time, mainly subsisting on a diet of shounen shows and wasn’t aware of the emotional depths that could be found in anime. It also didn’t help that I had absolutely no knowledge of what to expect and was lulled into a false sense of security by it’s light-hearted start. Therefore, when the story turned tragic, I wasn’t ready for it and ended up crying for just about every remaining episode.

Natsukage is the name of the instrumental track that KyoAni used for many of the emotional scenes during AIR and thus when I hear it, I’m reminded of those scenes.

-

Koikogarete Mita Yume – from Cross Game

The show’s first closing is another song that can bring me to tears and was able to from the very first time I heard it, which was in episode 1.

That episode completely blew me away. I wasn’t expecting to see enough character building and tragedy to fill most series all within those 24 minutes and by playing this song at the saddest scene meant that I’d always link this song to that first episode. Nor has that episode and that song lost it’s power to move the viewer, recently the animators essentially reshowed the first episode in it’s entirety for the episode 30 recap.

-

Kanon by Pachebel – from Kanon

The wedding standard got repurposed for another of Key’s works – Kanon. This time, the characters actually referenced the song in the show and provided a strong means for the viewers to attach the often tragic nature of Kanon to the song. At least when I hear this song in public it’ll probably be at a wedding and it’ll be more socially acceptable to cry to it.

-

“Libera me” From Hell – from Gurren Lagann

I’m convinced that Gurren Lagann is one of the greatest anime ever made and should be required watching for, not only those who profess to be an anime fan, but also for every single kid that grows up watching the insipid tv shows that pass for kid’s shows these days.

This song was used in many places throughout the show, primarily when it was time for the good guys to kick butt which makes it a strange song to cry over. And it would be but for it’s use during one of the best scenes to Gurren Lagann which happened in episode 26. The hero of the show, Simon, was given the choice between the easy way out and the harder path that true heroism calls for. He chooses the path of heroism and as a result is able to break himself and his comrades out of a devious trap laid by the enemy. The whole scene is very emotional, a testament to Gainax’s stellar character development and story telling ability, and having this track play during the entire scene meant that those emotions come back whenever hear it.

And within the entire scene there’s a small part that absolutely gets to me every single time I see it. The trap that Simon breaks everyone out of gives each person the ability to live in whatever dream world they wish for. One of the people trapped is Viral; he’s a beastman which means he looks human but was created sterile and he has a tough-as-nails personality so one would expect his dream world to be some sort Valhalla battlefield but it’s not – it’s living in a little cottage in a country meadow with a wife and a daughter that calls him “Papa”.

-

Dango Daikazoku – from Clannad

Yes, another song from a Key/KyoAni anime, this time it’s from Clannad. This was used as the first season ending but it wasn’t until the second season that this became tear inducing. Though in the case of Dango Daikazoku (or “Big Dango Family”), the song brings tears from being linked to the tragic parts to Clannad and also from the happy parts.

-

Love is a Flower, You are a Seed – from Only Yesterday

In many ways Only Yesterday is my favorite Studio Ghibli work so I find it an absolute travesty that it’s the only Studio Ghibli movie not released in America.

This is the only song that exclusively makes me shed tears from happiness alone. It’s the end song to Only Yesterday and the animators had it playing while the movie had it’s climatic scene before going to credits. So, like the others, those emotions got transferred to the song and hearing this song gets to me every time.

Anyone else want to share? Or is everyone too busy getting in the Halloween mood today?

Misguided Ghosts - Jun Tan

I’m going away for a while
But I’ll be back, don’t try and follow me
’cause I’ll return as soon as possible
See I’m trying to find my place
But it might not be here where I feel safe
We all learn to make mistakes

And run
From them, from them
With no direction
We’ll run from them, from them
With no conviction

Cause I’m just one of those ghosts
Traveling endlessly
Don’t need no road
In fact they follow me
And we just go in circles

Astro Boy The Omega Factor

With Astro Boy out in the theaters, I am brushing off an oldie-but-goodie game for the Gameboy Advance. Despite that there is a game for the movie, this was sitting on my shelves and it is still awesome. Tell me it’s not, I’ll fight you!

After all you can play Advance games on your DS. I’m betting you knew this already. I couldn’t help myself I am a HUGE Astro Boy fan. So much so I’ll be getting the movie tie in game ASAP, of course I’ll let you know how that plays!!

Based more on the 80s cartoon update of the Tezuka classic than anything else Astro Boy Related, the Advance game takes you through a robot smash-fest with a boy robot that feels like equal parts MegaMan and Sonic the Hedgehog.

The story starts with young Astro coming online and the obligatory tutorial giving you the rundown on how the game is played and just what Astro is capable of. The biggest thing his is ability to adapt and learn, which is reflected by his interactions with several NPCs throughout the game that allow you to bolster Astro’s abilities.

The gameplay itself is simple enough and the customizing of Astro makes the side-scroller just that more interesting. Though, nobody ever really explains why Astro has guns coming out of his butt. What’s your guess?

Tatakau Shisho - The Book of Bantorra ep1 (okt.25.)

Tatakau Shisho – The Book of Bantorra (édekes posztere volt, s belenéztem, de a 2.részig nem tudok semmi marasztaló dolgot felhozni magamnak, hogy miért is kéne néznem… kicsit The Tower of Druaga the Sword of Uruk beütést érzek benne, mind a rajzolásban, mind az eseményben…

A hajón épp étkezik 3 magasrangú ember a Shindenki Templom-ból, s a Kra Körzetből kért új Húsáruról beszélnek. Megtámadták a hajót a Fegyveres Könyvtárosok.
A könyvtáros rend hajósa felveszi a vízben lévő igazgatót, Hamy-t.

What We're Watching

  1. Cheburashka Arere #1
Kids’ show about an alligator who gets a mutant monkey/mouse/koala(?) in a box of oranges and names it Cheburashka because it falls a lot. When it falls over it says ‘Arere?’. And that’s pretty much it.  Cute designs, but this is probably skewed too young.
  2. Eve no Jikan #4
Very good ep about an ugly first generation robot in a world of too human androids.
  3. Nyan Koi #3
Still okay high school comedy romance but now it’s really starting to veer too much into harem.
  4. Bakemonogatari #6
Still my favorite show. Senjogahara is amazing in this ep as the psycho girlfriend, and the ending is quite an unexpected pleasure.
  5. G.A. Geijutsu Art Design Class #4
  6. Spice and Wolf 2 #12
End of series 2. Well at least Lawrence said it, but since this is 4 of 9 books of course things are left stupidly unresolved. And as this goes on Lawrence gets more interesting and Horo gets less.
  7. Kobato #3
Visually great, still fun. The good deed feels less forced this time, some plot is actually kicking in.
  8. Kinnukuman #1
Since there’s no new Kaiketsu Zorori I threw this in this week. Real old school Stupid (with a capital S) gag anime that had everyone laughing since it’s just so ridiculous (and dated).
  9. Higepiyo #21
  10. Sora no Manimani #9

CGI Is Destroying Anime

Below: A snap from Appleseed. Top: A snap from Appleseed 2.

It seems to be a growing trend to use CGI in anime these days. Many fans will agree when I say that it totally destroys a perfectly good anime and can actually put one off to the point that they stop watching. Apart from any other considerations; it’s killing the art of drawing, not just in anime but even in western animation.

CGI began long ago, back in the1970s. At this stage it was crude to say the least. Now and then minor CGI was used in visual media but to a very lesser extent as it was fairly costly in those days and technical capabilities were exceedingly limited. Then, nearly two decades later, a company called Pixar created Toy Story, the first full-length, fully CGI animated production. The subsequent effects it had on the film industry would change everything, western and eastern alike.

After seeing the success of Toy Story, Disney slowly started phasing out hand-drawn animation in favour of CGI. Meanwhile, the art of special effects was dying a slow and painful death as the world of CGI encroached on it. Stop-animation was no safer because CGI artists proved they could produce very similar results in far less time at far less cost. It was only the diehards like Tim Burton who clung to the art of stop animation, but even they have or will soon bow to the inevitable.

The CGI trend has since begun spreading in the anime world in two ways. The first is by using a methodology known as “Cel-shading”. This form of CGI (supposedly) looks hand-drawn. A good example of this would be and anime film called “Appleseed”. It’s an attempt to replace traditional art with CGI. Scarily enough, Cel-shading has gained quite a bit of popularity. The second way in which CGI is corrupting anime is the use of regular looking computer graphics in conjunction with hand-drawn frames to handle the more complicated animation sequences that would be time consuming and difficult to draw. For example, a hand-drawn animation of people walking may have CGI windmills turning in the background. Though it also apparently works out cheaper than hand-drawing these sequences, in the end it can be a put-off to a lot of potential viewers out there.

To further exacerbate things, CGI in anime is very often of a low standard due to the budget constraints. Now CGI usually clashes visually with hand-drawn animation as it is, but when the computer graphics are of poor quality; they totally destroy the anime. It is a fact that, apart from large companies like Square Enix, Japan generally produces inferior CGI to the west when it comes to movies. This is because, as a good friend of mine once said, “America has military-sized budgets to throw at productions” where as Japan is a little more conservative, perhaps even a little more sensible.

Even if the CGI was on the level of Final Fantasy: Advent Children, it would still lack that special feeling and look that hand-drawn animation has. No matter how they have tried, no one has (And I doubt will any time soon) be able to produce the same look that hand-drawn animation has. This is the part that saddens me that most. To hell with everything else I’ve mentioned because the feel and look of anime is probably one of the biggest things that attract me to it and seeing great artwork and impressively animated scenes is simply priceless. There’s an anime called Porco Rosso (Kurenai no Buta – Original Japanese name). It’s a 1992 vintage and it’s completely hand-drawn. There are some amazingly well-animated scenes in it where just about everything is moving on the screen including the POV. I was mesmerised as I watched it. On the other hand, a friend and I recently began watching an anime called Blassreiter. I did not even finish watching episode one because there was so much CGI in the thing that the clashing between the computer graphics and the hand-drawn animation made it impossible to maintain focus. “Off-putting” would have been an understatement.

I don’t have a problem with using computer assistance for colour-fills or for background scrolling. In fact if it saves money, I say go for it. As long as all the components are hand-drawn, I don’t make a fuss over putting it together using digital means. In fact I’ll even go as far as saying that I don’t mind stuff drawn on a digital pad. As long as there always remains the “human” element of hand-drawn art, I’d say it’s perfectly fine.

While I’m not a purist who hates CGI and wants it eradicated from all non-interactive visual material, I do feel that it has its place and that place is not substituting traditional artwork. I thoroughly enjoyed the film Animatrix and both Final Fantasy CGI movies. I’m not saying get rid of CGI, I’m merely saying that we mustn’t abandon true artwork in favour of a lazier and more cost-effective medium.

A Week of Good Reviews

I spent most of last week doing talks and workshops on aspects of anime and manga, in venues ranging from a nineteenth-century wood-panelled room looking out on glorious autumnal parkland to an urban classroom, and got lovely feedback from all of them.

That’s not always a given, as anyone who does this kind of thing will tell you. Sometimes, however hard everyone tries, a talk or workshop just doesn’t work. If you pick up the first stirrings of disengagement – and believe me, after the first time it happens, you pick them up very quickly – you can pull things together and turn them around so that everybody gets something out of the experience. But if you’ve done your preparation properly, know your material, have checked out your group, and are ready to shift your emphasis so as to give them the right challenge, you usually get happy participants and good feedback.

This week, the feedback has been superb. A week like this creates a wonderful aura, a glow of contentment and satisfaction that would, I’m sure, make one absolutely insufferable if it were maintained. Luckily the next week has its own challenges, so I can’t afford to bask for too long. It’s nice while it lasts, though.

This week opened with the launch of The Art of Osamu Tezuka: God of Manga at Kinokuniya’s Avenue of the Americas branch in New York, and will close with the UK launch at MCM Expo at Excel. I’m hoping for more good reviews!

Non-Psychic Psychic Sword vs Hindu Magic Lasers

A few months back I was fortunate enough, blessed, I might say, to have the opportunity watch two incredible animated classics: Psychic Wars and Crystal Triangle.

Seeing those two OVAs on the same day made me aware of just how similar these two fine works are. Both concern heroes in noble professions who must confront an ancient inhuman race of evil beings who wish to once again replace humans as the dominant species of the planet using the most nonsense logic and power set possible. I know that describes a lot of bad 80s OVAs but these two in particular are so alike that if the world were a little different, I think that we’d be seeing not a crossover between all of the Pretty Cure girls or Naruto, Luffy, and Goku, but one between Psychic War’s Retsu Ukyou and Crystal Triangle’s Kamishiro Kouichirou. Or at the very least arguing about who would win in a fight.

Actually, we could do that right now. Let’s compare our two heroes.

Retsu Ukyou: Surgeon, visited by ancient spirits who give him “Psychic Powers,” which apparently means being able to summon swords and spears out of thin air. Shirt has a tendency to rip open to reveal his mighty pecs. Travels back in time to fight evil beasts whose goal is to travel into the future so that they can wipe out humanity. Does the nasty with a girl who turns out to be their last surviving member.

Kamishiro Kouichirou: World-famous archaeologist, gained his “Upanishad” powers and his ability to read “Jindai Moji” by studying with monks. Upanishad in this case manifests itself as the ability to shoot lasers out of magical batons. Shirt also has a tendency to burst open to further emphasize masculinity. Fights an evil over ten million years old that consists of alien buddhist monk dinosaurs who have been waiting for an evil star to empower them so that they can take over the world once more. Does not do the nasty with the girl who is the catalyst for the evil monsters’ return, but would have.

You’d think Kamishiro would definitely have the advantage with his Upanishad giving him a range advantage, but I’m pretty sure Retsu would be able to think of a way to get in close, where his superior close combat weapons would give him the edge. Ultimately though, the fight would come down to a matter of wits and cunning, as both men are incredibly resourceful and would be trying out-think the other. Is Retsu standing near any crates of dynamite, for instance? Well maybe he is, but it’s actually a trap to lure Kamishiro to attack, during which Retsu would use his knowledge of human anatomy to deliver a knock-out spear. But of course Kamishiro is too smart for that.

It’s a complex scenario which far transcends any intellectual battles by Lelouch and Schneizel, Kira and L, and Encyclopedia Brown and Wilford Wiggins.

Now, if the two of them could team up to fight the Most Dangerous Soldier known as Geist, then we’d have a real Japanimation on our hands.

To Aru Kagaku no Railgun - 03

Uiharu and Saten are meeting Kuroko and Misaka at Tokiwadai Middle School, but Saten falls into a puddle and has to change into a spare Tokiwadai uniform, much to Uiharu’s envy. Uiharu later gets called away for Judgment duty, accompanied by Kuroko, leaving Misaka with Saten. Apparently there is a student in the campus who can become invisible and thus uses such an ability to attack Tokiwadai students with an electric charger and do something horrifying to the unconscious girls. Meanwhile, Saten gets attacked when she is in the restroom and is discovered by Misaka.

After some minor detective work as to why the culprit is invisible to the victims, but visible through the CCTV and mirrors, and with Saten’s eyewitness account, they concluded that the culprit is Jufuku Miho, a girl with the ability Dummy Check that prevents people from noticing that they are being watched. They corner her after chasing her throughout the city with Uiharu monitoring her via CCTV, and Miho attacks Misaka using the electric charger (really, trying to electrify a person with electrical abilities?) but gets shocked instead. She confesses that she does such a terrifying thing due to a heart-wrenching rejection from a boy she loves. Saten consoles her and gains herself a female admirer in the process. Meanwhile, Misaka has doubts about the credibility of the database’s information, since Miho, as a level 2, is not supposed to be able to turn herself fully invisible, but is able to do so.

Eh? There’s less of a Kuroko x Misaka focus this week? But that’s honestly a good thing – I think I will die from nosebleeding & squeeing too much if every episode is as good as, or better than, episode 2 last week.

I already suspected that the culprit would draw something terrible on the victims’ faces, such as a mustache. When one of the victims covered her forehead with her fan, I was guessing at the word 馬鹿 (baka バカ), but little did I expect a Rock Lee. Meanwhile, the last portion about the database possibly having errors looks like a setup for information manipulation by a future enemy.

Paprika (2006)

Imagine: no more cable or satellite bills, no hardware to install, no worrying about bandwidth limits- just thousands of channels and crystal clear picture and sound quality.

With Satellite Direct, you get unlimited 24/7 access to over 3,500 channels. That’s thousands more than cable TV, including dozens of hard to find international channels, as well as all the best premium, movie, sports, news, and music programming. And unlike traditional satellite television, you don’t need to worry about expensive equipment or heavy satellite dishes. In fact, you don’t even have to wait for installation at all! Our easy to use software can be downloaded in about a minute… meaning you are only 60 seconds away from great television, without paying another cable bill ever again.

If you have a computer and an internet connection, you have the ability to cancel your cable company today, and begin enjoying thousands of premium channels right away.

What would you expect to pay for technology that allows you to access the best that television has to offer? Even spending several hundred dollars on a one time fee would add up to thousands of dollars in savings when compared to the thousands you will likely spend on cable subscription services over the next few years.

But for a limited time, Satellite Direct is offering their revolutionary software at the unbelievable price of only $49.95. That’s about half the average monthly cost of cable… for a lifetime of television service!

http://www.edicionesglenat.es/asp/reportaje.asp?pid=216

Fragmento del reportaje del Salón del Manga 2007:

(…)

Top Picks – Summer 2009 Anime, Part 1: Cast and Character Awards

Around this time of the year I like to pretend that it’s still summer because I know when I stop pretending, the coming winter will just depress me. Of course, the falling leaves and cool temperatures make it hard to pretend it’s something other than autumn. This extends to anime as well, just today, I watched two of the new fall shows and I realized that I can’t be dragging my feet anymore – it’s time to award my summer seasonal anime awards.

This season turned out to be a very impressive one. Between the carry-over shows and the new shows, I think just about every genre had at least a couple shows to pick from and at least one of those shows were a winner. Nor was there any shortage of fuel to fan the flames of fandom. KyoAni took the title “Endless Eight” way too literally, at times Shaft/Shinbou couldn’t quite pull off doing two shows at the same time, Bones left some unhappy over the “scientific” Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, and the animators behind Phantom didn’t seem to mind that the ending of their show was rather “nice boaty”. So it was an all-around good season for anime, and now let’s head for the first group of awards the cast and character awards.

Below is a listing of the shows that I watched this season and are the pool from which the picks for all the awards are coming from. There were a few shows that should be listed since I intended to watch them and I still intend to get to them but for various reasons (time, releases suddenly slow, and apathy) they didn’t get watched. They’ll be included during the yearly awards, assuming I finish them up by the end of the year.

Also a reminder, I’ll try to keep spoilers to a minimum but there’ll be some because of how they’ll relate to specific awards and for the continuing shows, only the part of the series that ran during this season is under consideration for this season’s awards.

Carry-over shows watched this season (8): Phantom ~Requiem of Phantom~, Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Hayate Season 2, Cross Game, Kemono no Souja Erin, Tears to Tiara, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2009), Hetalia Axis Powers

New shows watched this season (10): Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, Bakemonogatari, Spice and Wolf 2, Taishou Yakyuu Musume, Aoi Hana, Sora no Manimani, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei S. 3, CANAAN, Umineko no Naku Koro ni, Umi Monogatari

Shows that got dropped (3): Fight Ippatsu! Juuden-chan!!, Needless, Kanamemo

Best Female Main Character

Winner: Senjougahara from Bakemonogatari

Runner-up: Erin from Kemono no Souja Erin, Horo from Spice and Wolf 2

I really, really wanted to award Erin best female main character because she has shown her worthiness multiple times over (and I felt bad that I took so long before catching up with the series which probably cost her the best female main character award in the spring season). I even penciled her into the winners spot but seeing Senjougahara as the runner-up spot just didn’t seem right because Senjougahara is a truly great characcccter that will long be remembered and loved. The Senjougahara fascination movement has reached levels that I really haven’t seen since the Melancholy of Haruhi came out in 2006 and she is certainly worth the fuss. Much like how Araragi’s vocabulary was insufficient to describe the night sky in episode 12, I don’t posses the vocabulary to accurately describe why Senjougahara deserves this award – words like awesome, interesting, unique, intelligent, witty, and strong seem too shallow and my thesaurus isn’t giving me anything better – so instead I’ll just submit episode 12 of Bakemonogatari as the needed proof.

Best Male Main Character

Sensitive Kou moment #856

Winner: Kou from Cross Game

Once a character or show has won in a particular category one season, it becomes very hard for that same show to win the same category again in a later season. I think this helps guard against having the past goodness of a show affect it’s chances in the current season. However, if the show continues to make a convincing enough case then I will reward it a second time.

Kou won best male main character for the spring season which makes it much harder to win a second time but there wasn’t another male character that was able to compete against Kou. He continues to display all the attributes – maturity, selflessness, kindness, understanding, being an awesome pitcher but still being humble, and his continued remembrance of Waka – that easily ensured that he’d win this award the first time.

Best Supporting Character

Winner: Roy Mustang from Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood

I just have the feeling that I’ll get at least one person who will comment that Mustang is a main character and not just a supporting character. So let me say that while he is an important character to the show, the only characters that I consider main characters are Ed and Al because these are the only two characters that the entire show revolves around and are in the show enough. Nor is there anything wrong with just being a supporting character because this doesn’t lessen the greatness of his character.

In the first incarnation of the anime, the climax of the first season should have prodded Roy Mustang into action and it didn’t – which ultimately lead to the inferior anime-only ending. This time around, with the source material in place, this climax event propels Roy Mustang into action and allows the viewer to get the full measure of his character. His quixotic quest to find justice, along with his fierce loyalty, and being a true bad ass (see episode 19) makes him an easy pick for this award.

Best Screen-grabber

Winner: Shamisen from The Melancholy of Haruhi (2009)

Runner-up: The pitcher on the female baseball team from Cross Game

This award goes to those characters with small roles to play in an anime but are still able to leave a big impression. In the case of Shamisen – the talking cat first seen three years ago in Haruhi’s awful movie – his appearance in the renewed Haruhi series was the answer to a figurative itch I’ve had for these past three years. After all, as everyone knows talking, sarcastic cat = epic win and making us wait for more Shamisen was just cruel. Or to put his epic awesomeness in another way, Shamisen was able to wash the lingering distaste that Endless Eight left right away and made me excited about the eventual true second season of Haruhi.

Best Couple

Winner: Kraft Lawrence and Horo from Spice and Wolf 2

Runner-up: Senjougahara and Araragi from Bakemonogatari

I sometimes wonder if I watch different shows then other people because the talk about this series was that it was a boring show about economics and merchants but I found Spice and Wolf to actually be about the relationship of a normal guy, who happens to be a merchant, and a wolf harvest goddess that takes a nearly human form (add a tail and ears). Each person has their own strengths and this allows their relationship to be a balanced one – which is somewhat rare in anime because one side of a relationship is normally shown as the much more dominant like in Bakemonogatari. One of the things I really liked in this season was the dawning realization by Horo that humans don’t live a long time when compared to gods which is starting to color how she interacts with Lawrence and adds even more complexity to their relationship. Hopefully, a third season will be on it’s way so we can see how the story unfolds and maybe this time they’ll do a 26 episode run – 13 just isn’t enough time.

Best Character Ability/Power

Winner: Haruhi’s ability to alter reality to suit her whims

I have been able to resist the temptation to read further in the light novels so I’m still really in the dark about what exactly is Haruhi. For all I know, Haruhi is within the Matrix and one day she’ll meet Laurence Fishburne and we’ll find out that Haruhi is “The One”.

Whatever the root cause to Haruhi’s powers, the thing that the new episodes really showed is that she does have vast powers and under the right conditions, she’ll use them quite frequently. The only drawback, at least from Haruhi’s standpoint, is that she’s unaware that she has this capability. Maybe it’s a good thing that she has these powers since the world has been largely unaffected and could you imagine if a normal, hormonally driven teenage boy got these powers – I don’t think it would be a stretch to say that the only woman ruined for marriage would be Mikuru.

Best Cast of Characters

Winner: Cross Game

Some shows lose steam as more characters are introduced because the plot quickly bogs down; some shows, however, thrive with a large cast and Cross Game is one such show. Every character is unique and interesting; no cookie-cutter characters here. I get excited whenever a new character gets introduced because there’s always a good reason for that character’s introduction even if it’s not apparent at the beginning and it’s sometimes surprising to see how he/she will interact with the other cast.

Best Character Development for Cast

Winner: Umi Monogatari

Recently I wrote how Umi Monogatari kept itself simple and was able to end up being a good anime. One of the reasons why this show turned out good was, instead of relying on unlikely coincidences and contrived events that force the characters to change and grow, the plot was left to the characters acting according to their own strengths and weaknesses. The result was that we still got to see the cast face challenges that caused them to grow but Umi Monogatari felt natural and more real than many other shows that aired this season.

Best Character Development of a Single Character

Winner: Erin from Kemono no Souja Erin

As much as I’ve love Kemono no Souja Erin, I realize that even after 35 episodes – the animators are still building Erin’s character and getting her ready for the hero role that she’s going to have to play in the future. This has entailed two time skips and enough hardship that many people would have despaired. Erin hasn’t, she resolutely moves forward to face the next problem and to protect those that she feels need protected. When all the plot threads that have been hinted at finally come together and whatever the exact crisis turns out to be, Erin’s going to be ready to face it and overcome it. I really can’t wait to see how the rest of the series will play out.

-

That’s the end of part 1; I hope to have the second part up within a day. Comments and feedback are always appreciated – I’d love to see what others would pick.

-

And finally, these two deserve an award, I'm just not sure which one.

Bike

Day 1: Yeah! Ready to buy a bike! Brought my helmet and 2 bike locks with me, yeah! Oh, why isn’t my pin working?
Day 2: Yeah! Got my money, heading over to the store! Oh, it’s too late, it’s closed.
Day 3: Yeah! Got my money, got my bike lock, heading over to the store! Oh, it’s closed this early? OH! That’s what 10月8 means, they’re closed for the week for national day! The camping store too! Ah, I had a sneaking suspicion that was the case! No bike!
30 seconds after I turned around to go home, something caught my eye. A.T. Field? Woah woah woah, back up. I ran back to read his shirt: “Stop! A.T. Field! We need the Human Instrumentality Project!” At this point the person inside the shirt was questioning my giddiness at seeing it. I yelled out “Evangelion!” figuring he would understand. I mean it’s what they call the show in Japanese, and if he’s a nerd enough to wear a Human Instrumentality Project shirt, he’s a nerd enough to have watched it in the original language. Yet he still seemed puzzled. I tried saying it a couple different ways: “Evangerion!” “Ehvangelion!”. I pointed to his shirt and everything. At this point he was slowly sounding out “So-ree, I don-t spea-“ I cut him off, realizing he didn’t understand. I told him “Wo xihuan ni de—“and I motioned to his shirt. He seemed to understand, and if he didn’t, he was in a rush. I wonder if he actually knew what his shirt meant.
“Hey, guess what. I was just attacked by some foreigner who kept going ‘avangelion’ or something and was pointing at me. Then he said ‘I like your..” and pointed at me again.”
“Those Americans, they don’t know what they’re doin’!”

4/10-09 "Fade to black"

Hi.

I totally forgot about this blogg. Sorry about that.

I had an English test last Friday, the teacher said that it would be on the chapter we’d been working with. But noo, it wasn’t anything that we HAD worked with. *’Sigh* But I think that I did okey either way.

I have finished several series this week. Might say something about them later.

I saw the third bleach movie yesterday. And it was awesome! Like way better then I thought it would be. It was “beginning of bleach” good. You know, like it was in the beginning. Before it got weird. You know…

The new characters, the enemies, was not that annoying and it was only two.

I don’t really know what more to tell about it. Just see it. Way better then the fillers in the original series.

And the ending song? It was also awesome! I really liked it.

I have also seen some new animes, one being “Inuyasha Final act” I have seen the first series and read the manga but I have completly lost. I didn’t remember when that happened. And so many chakters was still there!

Well, I have to stop for today.

By,bye

Októberi Anime Line Up: To Aru Kagaku no Railgun

No ők is tök jófejek.
Senki se packázzon azzal a lánnyal, aki megosztotta vele a béka-figuráját! >_<

[Review] Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

Just finished this anime, I should also write a review about Spice and Wolf, but I think that requires more constructive work.. Nevertheless I should be doing my assignments =________=

Anyway, I’ll just throw some thoughts down for this lovely anime.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

From MAL -

First note this:

The premise of the project is the 70% possibility that a magnitude 7.0 earthquake will occur in Tokyo in the next 30 years. The anime depicts what would happen if an 8.0 earthquake took place.

This was the only thing that was required for me to watch this anime – it just sounded interesting; a project.

This anime, unlike most animes out there, is not based off any manga, light novel etc.. but rather, raw research.

So a bit more backgrounding:

The story centers on Mirai, a middle school freshman girl who goes to Tokyo’s artificial Odaiba Island for a robot exhibition with her brother Yuuki at the start of summer vacation. A powerful tremor emanates from an ocean trench, the famed Tokyo Tower and Rainbow Bridge crumble and fall, and the landscape of Tokyo changes in an instant. With the help of a motorcycle delivery woman named Mari who they meet on Odaiba, Mirai and Yuuki strive to head back to their Setagaya home in western Tokyo.

Alright, so from that you can pretty much tell that the story is pretty typical of a disaster plot. You focus on a few main characters which have one goal. In this case it’s to return home, and survive from this disaster.

Story – Like I said, your typical story, which you’d expect from a disaster plot, but I think it was done very nicely. There are only 11 episodes, nice and short. But the creators kept it sensible, 11 episodes means no time for major character development, and they didn’t. They focused it well. Um.. without having to give away too much, the story was well executed, it felt like the modern day version of Grave of the Fireflies which made a lot of people bawl like a baby.

Animation - Well done, given the nature of the plot, it had to be well done, with all the chaos and disaster. Supposedly some episodes lost quality in animation.. but I couldn’t really tell?

Sound – Not much to say here.. well music was alright, nothing special, nothing I can remember from it (even though I just finished it). Voice acting was done very nicely; must’ve been hard roles to play. It’s probably not easy to get in character like like.

Last Words – Well, I’ve put this anime off for awhile, finishing off other animes (see old reviews). But when I finally got around to this, I really enjoyed it. It’s different, fresh (to an extent) and definitely something a lot of us can relate to. Family, friends, values, hardships, ups and downs..  It’s also somewhat realistic. But doesn’t it sound unique? Given that it’s a project where actual research was conducted.

I wonder.. will Tokyo really have an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 in the next 30 years?
