The first volume of Kazuhiro Furuhashi’s and Sunrise’s new OVA series Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn is now the #1 selling anime Blu-Ray release (by first week sales) and is topped only by, strangely enough, the Michael Jackson This Is It documentary. The previous top two first-week Blu-Ray releases for anime have been Mamoru Hosada’s film Summer Wars and Hideaki Anno’s Evangelion 1.11. Gundam Unicorn (or just UC if you don’t want people to know that you watch a show called Unicorn) is by far the best of all the recent Gundam incarnations that I’ve seen over the past decade or so since Yoshiyuki Tomino’s Turn A Gundam. This new OVA returns to the originial series’ Universal Century timeline for the first time since perhaps 08th MS Team.
